Catalanesca White wine

Technical specifications

Description

Catalanesca vine grape cultivar was imported in Italy from Catalogna (Spain) in 1450 by Alfornso I D’Aragona King of two Sicilies. It was planted on Mount Somma and Terzigno hills, and it spread very fast over the prolific volcanic soil.

Is spite of the Catalanesca grape was considered one of the most esteemed cultivar of the Vesuvius area until 60 years ago, nowadays it exclusively survives in small districts in the Vesuvius National Park under the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Catalanesca grape has always been vinified by vesuvian farmers giving rise to different and refined workmanships, although it has been simply certified as table grape until 2006.

Since October 2006 Catalanesca grapes have been officially included among the grapes of wine quality native to the Campanian Region, thanks to a research project lead by Michele Manzo and Luigi Moio and promoted by Assessorato all’Agricoltura e alle Attività Produttive from Campania Region (Campanian Department of Agriculture and Industry).

Catalanesca grape is characterized by a slow ripening process. It is a grape that is harvested between October and November, but it can be left on the vine until Christmas.

Catalanesca bunch is large, long, tapering, and shouldered, opened to a side it has few berries with a really thick skin which preserve it from toadstool and guarantee the good quality of the grapes until December.

Catalanesca berries are golden, ovoid, medium sized. The flesh is sweet and crispy, while the high sugar content makes it suitable for creating pleasingly subtle wines that achieve their full promise after maturing for at least two years.

The wine is totally obtained from Catalanesca grapes,  It was introduced as “table wine” (we are waiting for the authorization to apply the IGT label on it) though it’s a really white wine, with a deep straw yellow colour, extraordinary lightly and firm. This wine, which has good structure, persistent flavour but still very fresh; can also boast a composite range of aromas; ranging from acacia blossom, broom and magnolia .Casa Barone White Wine 2007 is extraordinary suitable for fish plates, especially for stockfish, roasted codfish and white meat.
