“My grandfather Giovanni, a wine grower in Cisterna d’Asti who produced Nebbiolo, Bonarda and Barbera grapes, had to sell his grapes for very little money because of the poverty as the Second World War ended. In those days the idea of making his own wine and selling it as his main business was far from the mind of his small enterprise.

Only later did my father Francesco, along with my mother Amalia, decide to do what their ancestor had not dared or been able to. So at the end of sixties they established the Rolfo winery and started their own wine production.

Nowadays our family works in the vineyards, as my grandfather did many years ago, with pride and dedication.”

‘Azienda Rolfo’ is run by the family and has its own wine cellar in Montà d’Alba, in the heart of Roero Hills, on the left bank of the river Tanaro. The vineyards are cultivated with Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis, all Piedmontese grape varieties which extend along the slopes facing the sun, where the microclimate is particularly favourable and the sandy soil - rich of fossils - favours intense red wines with strong character and good balance, and delicious, fragrant, scented white wines.

My parents, my wife Cesira and I, have the steadfast belief that our future must be reached through quality and tradition. To achieve this goal it is necessary to work seriously and continuously both in the vineyard and winery, allowing our wines to shine with the unique personality that only an area like Roero Hills can offer.

In the vineyard we work with respect for nature, using integrated systems against parasites, using manure and leaving turf between the rows of vines. During the harvest, which is of course manual, we bring home the grapes in crates, and press them the same day.

In the winery we use modern technologies, which respect the product we are making, without altering its original characteristics, and preserving its tradition and terroir.
