From its strategic position the Fattoria di Palazzo Vecchio, formerly known as the Fattoria di Valiano, dominated the border area between what was then the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Overlooking the Val di Chiana, it has witnessed great historical events, including the reclamation of the valley itself, a grandiose work of engineering and hydraulics begun in 1788 on commission from Grand Duke Leopold I of Lorraine, who knew that completion of the project would make the valley the richest and most fertile in Tuscany.

In the 1950s Palazzo Vecchio was acquired by Count Riccardo Zorzi, who worked passionately to revive the local wine-making traditions and culture, but it was not until 1980 that Marco Sbernadori, along with his wife Maria Alessandra Zorzi, embarked on an ambitious project that in 1990 would lead to the production of the first bottles of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Already at is birth the wine displayed a good structure, the fruit of land that is particularly well suited to grape-growing, as described in all the studies.

Perched atop a hill and surrounded by vineyards, Palazzo Vecchio commands a 360° view of countryside that is acclaimed for its beauty. It enjoys a unique environmental situation, not only due to the position of its vineyards and the recognised quality of its soil, but also for its particularly favourable climatic conditions, with light breezes that caress the grapes, keeping them perfectly healthy.
